         Introduction of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary

Sepahijala LakeThere has been a worldwide cry for Conservation of bio-diversity for the very existence of mankind. All efforts are now required to protect the existing 4.5% protected area for such purpose in India. Conservation of Bio-diversity of Sepahijala wildlife Sanctuary is one of such effort. In Tripura, there are four Wildlife Sanctuary viz. Sepahijala, Trishna, Gumti and Rowa of which Sepahijala is of unique type. One can appreciate both in-situ and ex-situ conservation of  flora and fauna at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary.    The story goes that there was a camp of sepoy of the then Maharaja of Tripura on the side of marshy area locally called “JALA’ near existing Forest Training School. There after the name of this place was coined as Sepahijala. This area was highly rich in fauna and flora. With the increasing population, the pressure on the forest area of Sepahijala was also increased resulting in diminishing of forest cover. In order to protect this hot spot of bio-diversity an idea of setting up of Bio-complex was mooted and therefore the Sepahijala Bio-complex came into existence in the year 1972 with setting up of a small Botanical garden and a small Deer Park. The Deer parkDeer Park was gradually raised in a form of Zoo.In order to ensure better conservation of bio-diversity of this area, this Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary was constituted on 2nd February 1987.
