ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITES TAKEN IN TRIPURA DURING THE WATER MONTH - JULY, 2003

Tripura State Pollution Control Board was identified as Regional Resource Agency for National Environment Awareness Campaign by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India since 1996-97 and also as Nodal Agency for National Green Corps programme in Tripura since the NGC prorgamme was launched. Since 1996 Tripura State Pollution Control Board is trying to generate environmental awareness in the masses to safe guard the ecological balance of our State. Since, both the themes of National Environment Awareness Campaign and World Environment Day are regarding water, a strong urge is observed in the approach of NGOs and Institutions to work on the themes. It is our considered opinion that this year different NGOs and Educational Institutions are methodically coming forward to take up programmes for conservation of different water bodies and also for action oriented programmes to ensure providing safe drinking water. They have also taken different programmes to aware the people about the ill effect of contaminated water.

Under National Environment Awareness Campaign 2002-03, 146 NGOs/Educational Institutions were given financial assistance. In the interaction meet where the funds were disbursed to them, it was categorically advised to take up programmes on water conservation during the month of July, 2003. All the NGOs and Institutions have organized their programmes on the theme during the month of July, 2003. The officials from Tripura State Pollution Control Board also attended different programmes and gave presentation on water conservation.

Tripura State Pollution Control Board collected 34 nos. of water samples from the North Tripura District along the International Border with Bangladesh and analysed Arsenic and Iron parameters in our laboratory since few cases skin disease were reported. Fortunately, Arsenic was not found in any of the samples. However, high level of iron were found. TSPCB is publishing this report soon for taking appropriate action by the concerned authorities.

The water of pond inside the IGM Hospital complex , in the central part of Agartala was not used due to excess shrubs that developed along the bank of it and also spread over the water. The hospital authority did not take any measures to clean the water body. Craftsworld, a reputed NGO in collaboration with the Tripura State Pollution Cotnrol Board cleaned the bank of it and as well as the water of the pond.

Rana Dighi, a ancient pond in Dharmanagar, without proper maintenance almost became a dumping station for the locality. It has been reported in the newspaper and a team comprising of scientists and engineers of Tripura State Pollution Control Board collected water samples and analysed in the laboratory. With the findings of the analysis, Tripura State Pollution Control Board advised District administration to take proper action. And now the process of reclaimation of the pond is going on.

Few Educational Institutions collected water samples as a part of NEAC and get the water test done by the Tripura State Pollution Control Board. After getting the report of the water quality, they made the people of that area aware about the condition of the drinking water they are using.

400 Eco Clubs through out the State have taken massive awareness programme on water during the month of July, 2003.

Few NGOs from the hilly areas also have taken up water harvesting programme.
